Potential energy is the energy held by an object because of its position relative to other objects.
We can also think of this as the energy stored in objects due to their position or conditions
Examples-:
1)If we take a hammer and strike it on a plastic sheet, the plastic sheet breaks into several pieces. The plastic sheet breaks and posses potential energy.
2)When we take a stone and drop it from a height on a earthen pot, it is likely to break. The earthen pot which breaks posses potential energy.

Potential energy
- Potential energy is the energy retained in an object as a result of its position in relation to a zero point.
- If an object is located at a height over (or even below) the zero height, it has gravitational force.
- Potential energy is defined as the energy secured by an object as a result of its position in relation to other objects, stresses/savings inside itself, electric current, or other factors such as energy.
- The electric potential energy of a charged object in an electric field.
