potential energy:the energy which makes a moving object at rest when it is in motion is called as kinetic energy.
kinetic energy:the energy which makes a body come in to motion when it is in rest is called as kinetic energy.

They both are mechanical energy in which kinetic energy is the energy by virtue of the motion of the object whereas potential energy by virtue of the height of the object.
