Potential energy(P.E) is the energy possessed  by a body by virtue of its height,or strained state( configuration).
P.E= mgh

What is potential energy ?

- Potential energy is a type of energy which is stored in an object due to the position of that object.It is a type of Mechanical energy.

What is it's SI unit?

- It's SI unit is same as that of energy as it is a kind of energy. Therefore, it's SI unit is also Joule. It is denoted by J.

Examples of potential energy :-

1) Gravitational potential energy

2)Elastic potential energy

3) Spring potential energy

Given,

A body is at a height of 5m above Earth's surface

To find,

Potential energy stored in it

Solution :

Let the mass of the body be .

P.E = mgh = m × 10 × 5 = 50m ( Answer )

P.E under gravitational force is given by = mgh

Where m is mass of object, g is Acceleration due to gravity, h is height above ground ( Earth's surface ).
