⇒POTENTIOMETER : a potentiometer is a device used to accurately measure the e.m.f of a voltage source or potential difference between two points in an electrical circuit .
⇒PRINCIPLE : if a wire f uniform area of cross-section is carrying a steady current , then fall of potential across any portion of the wire is directly proportional to the length of that portion .
R = ρ l / A ,
we know that , V = i R
implies, V = i ( ρl / A )
V = l ( ρi / A)
implies, V = l K where K is constant and K = ρ i /A
therefore , V = k L
