Power Sharing is a system of political arrangements in which power is shared between different organs of the government, between different levels of the government, between different social groups and between different political parties, pressure groups and movements.

In modern democracies, power sharing arrangements can take many forms.

  1. Power is shared among different organs of govt., such as the legislature, executive, and judiciary. This is called horizontal distribution of power.
  2. Power can be shared among govts. at different levels - a general govt. for the entire country & govt. at the provincial or regional level. This is called federal division of power or vertical division of power.
  3. Power may also be shared among different social groups such as religious and linguistic groups.
