Cells arise from pre-existing cells. This is the third rule of the Cell Theory. But what is meant by pre-existing cells?

The theory tells us that life has to arise from pre-existing life, not by spontaneous generation, as was thought until the 18th century.

The idea of spontaneous generation means that certain forms such as fleas could arise from inanimate matter such as dust, or that maggots could arise from dead flesh.

One the other hand the contemporary Cell Theory tells us that this simply is not possible. New cells can be created only by a process of reproduction performed by already existing cells.

So the third rule could also be simplified to “All cells come from existing cells”.

Therefore pre-existing cells are just cells that “were there before”. Just normal cells. That’s all.
