A preposition is a word which shows relationships between other words in a sentence.

Preposition of Time - at, in, on

  • I have a meeting at 9 a.m
  • The shop closes at midnight.
  • Reena went home at lunchtime.
  • Do you work on Saturdays?
  • Her birthday is on 9th September
  • Where will you be on New Year's Day?
  • Do you think we will go to Jupiter in the future?
  • In Himachal, it often snows in December.
  • There should be a lot of progress in the next century.

In each of the sentences, some time is mentioned --- either a specific time, a month or time in the future. How do we know when to use each of these?

We use:

  • 'at' for a presice time
  • 'in' for months, years, centuries and long periods.
  • 'on' for days and dates.

Remember:-

When we say last, next, every, this, we do not use at, in, on.

  • I went to Mumbai last june. ( not in last june)
  • He's coming back next Friday. (not on next Friday)
  • I go home every diwali. (not at every Diwali)
  • We'll call you back this evening. (not in this evening)
