Preposition :
❀Preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to govern its relation to some preceding noun or pronoun.
❀ Prepositions are words that are used before nouns to show how that noun is related to something else in a sentence. Usually, prepositions are used to show location , position or time. Prepositions can be of many kinds.
Example:-
1. The pen is in the inkpot.
2. We depend on you.
3. The ship is sailing to the shore
4. Cut the rope with a knife.
5. The traveller sat under a tree.
Each word in bold type is used before and noun or pronoun. It governs the relation of this noun or pronoun with the preceding noun or pronoun.
1. The word- in -shows the relation of inkpot with pen.
.2. The word - on- shows the relation of you with we.
3. The word - to - shows the relation of shore with ship.
4. The word - with - shows the relation of knife with rope.
5. The word-under-shows the relation of tree with traveller.
Kinds of Preposition:
Prepositions are of three types :
1. Simple Prepositions
2. Compound Prepositions
3. Participial Prepositions.
Simple Prepositions
Simple prepositions are simple short words that have not been derived from any other words ; as :
at, by, down, for, from, in, of, near, on, out, over, since, through, till, to, under, up, with.
Compound Prepositions
Compound prepositions are compound words formed by putting up prefixes before nouns and adjectives etc. ; as :

Participial Prepositions
Participial prepositions are present participles in form but they are used as prepositions ; as :

Use of some prepositions :
(a) By, with
By is used with the agent or doer of an action while with is used with the instrument used to perform an action;as:
1. The boy was beaten by the teacher
2. The boy was beaten with a stick.
(b) Between, Among
Between is used in regard to two persons or things while among in regard to more than two persons are things ; as :
1. The property was divided between the two brothers.
2.Sweets were distributed among the children.
(c)Beside , besides
Beside means by the side of while besides means addition
(d) At, in, on
In regard to place-
At is used with villages and small towns.
In is used with big towns, districts, states, and countries.
On is used with the surface of an object
In regard to time-
At is used with clock time, noon, night
In is used with morning, afternoon, evening, months, weeks, and years.
On is used with days and dates

In is used in regard to rest inside but into for motion inside.
(f) On, upob
On is used in regard to rest on a surface, but upon involves motion.
(g) In, after, within
In is used for just the end of a period, but after denotes the passing of this period while within means before that period.

Since is used with point of time while for with period of time

Till means up to while by means not later than
(J) Over, above
Over and above both mean at a higher level but above denotes vertical height while over implies motion also
(K) Under, below
Under is the opposite of over while below of above.
