it is one of the ecological succession of plant life.It often occurs after a devastating event has wiped out the organisms that lived in the area, or with the creation of a new habitat.It generally occurs in lifeless areas for eg- new sand dunes, areas where the volcano has erupted,soil which isnt capable of retaining life or glaciers etc.
