Primary sewage treatment is the conventional sedimentation, filtration and chlorination technique, where the waste water is sent into a sequential filtration to remove relatively large particles and debris. Then the grit and small pebbles are removed by sedimentation. This is a physical removal of particles. The effluent from this is sent to secondary treatment.

Primary treatment consists of temporarily holding the sewage in a quiescent basin where heavy solids can settle to the bottom while oil, grease and lighter solids float to the surface. The settled and floating materials are removed and the remaining liquid may be discharged or subjected to secondary treatment
