Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana was launched by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government  in December 2000 as a massive programme to provide all weather rural road connectivity to every rural habitation with a minimum population of 500 in the plains and 250-plus in hill states, tribal districts and desert areas.

Prime Minister Rural Road Scheme is a nationwide plan in India to provide good all-weather roadconnectivity to unconnected villages.Urban roads are excluded from the purview of this Programme. Even in the rural areas, PMGSY covers only the Rural Roads.This scheme  is one of the most successful initiatives in rural India.
