A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that is not a product of two smaller natural numbers. A natural number greater than 1 that is not prime is called a composite number. For example, 5 is prime because the only ways of writing it as a product, 1 × 5 or 5 × 1, involve 5 itself.

Prime numbers are the numbers who have no other factors except 1 and themselves.

Examples :-

2 ; factors 1 & 2

3 ; factors 1 & 3

and 5, 7, 11, 13, ...... etc.

MORE TO KNOW :-

The numbers which have more than 2 factors (including 1 & themselves) are composite numbers.

Examples :-

4 ; factors 1, 2 & 4 [three factors]

6 ; factors 1, 2, 3 & 6 [four factors]

and 8, 9, 10, 18, 24,......etc.

Hope it helps.
