A prokaryotic cell is a cell which lacks a well-defined nucleus surrounded by a nuclear membrane. Examples are bacteria and blue-green algae.

A eukaryotic cell is a cell that has a well defined nucleus. All organisms apart from bacteria, blue-green algae and virus are eukaryotes.
