What is Pronoun?

A pronoun replaces a noun in a sentence. Its role in a sentence is similar to that of a noun.

➽ The noun is replaced by pronoun is called it's antecedent.

Example:-

  • Ramit is a good student. He is regular in school.

In above, Ramit is the antecedent of the pronoun he.

2) Possessive pronouns:- Possessive pronouns are those words that show possession or belongingness.

Examples:-

  • This pen is mine.
  • Is this wallet yours?

3) Demonstrative pronouns:- Demonstrative pronouns are words that identify or point to the noun in a sentence.

Examples:-

  • This is a wonderful piece of furniture.
  • These are lovely flowers.

4) Interrogative pronouns:- Interrogative pronouns are question words that are used in place of nouns.

Examples:-

  • What is this book about?
  • Who lives in your house?

5) Relative pronouns:- Relative pronouns are words that add information about a noun or tell the relationship between different things.

Examples:-

  • The girl who is wearing a blue frock is my niece.
  • The book that you took yesterday is mine.

6) Indefinite pronouns:- Indefinite pronouns are words that refer to persons or things in general and not to anything specific.

Examples:-

  • Everyone had come to the party.
  • Somebody must have taken your bag.

7) Reflexive pronouns:- When the subject and the object refer to the same person, a reflexive pronoun is used for the object.

Examples:-

  • The boys carried the luggage themselves.
  • You must work hard to help yourself.

8) Emphatic pronouns:- When reflexive pronouns are used to put emphasis on a particular noun, they are called emphatic pronouns.

Examples:-

  • He himself prepared the meal.
  • She herself gave this book to me.

9) Distributive pronouns:- Distributive pronouns are words that refer to persons or objects one at a time.

Examples:-

  • Each of the boys was present today.
  • Either of you can fill this form.

10) Reciprocal pronouns:- Sentences that indicate that two or more people carry out an action and receive its effect simultaneously.

Examples:-

  • Raghu and Mohan meet each other every Sunday.
  • We must help one another in the times of need.
