Prop roots are adventitious in nature, and are also called as Pillar roots. These are thick aerial roots growing from horizontal branches and provide support like pillars.

e.g. Ficus bengalensis.

In young condition these roots hang in air and absorb moisture from air, bear root caps and become reddish in colour by absorbing moisture.

When these roots reach the ground they develop a number of branches for proper anchorage. They are very hard and so thick that it’s hard to distinguish between the prop root and the stem.

Banyan tree in Indian Botanical Garden, Sibpur, Howrah, West Bengal, has a circumfrence of 404 meters! It occupies an area of 5.2 acers! It has 1775 prop roots in total
