Water potential(psi w) is free energy available to water molecules or more specifically kinetic enrergy to move freely.When sm solute is dissolved in water we say the water potential has decreased because now the solutes will occupy some space n hence free space available for movements of water molecules decrease nd therefore they lose kinetic energy due to collisions n all.This is the main concept of water potential.Hope this helps u!
