Puberty in females can start from ages of 9 and 14 and in males between the ages of 10 to 17 years. Physical appearance of both boys and girls changes during puberty and each develops stronger sexual characteristics. The change of puberty can take from one to six years. This is a general time frame which can vary and every child follows a unique, individual path. The period of adolescence can be a difficult time due to the physical and emotional changes. The hormonal changes that occur in adolescence can cause socio-emotional effects such as tension, restlessness, moodiness, withdrawal, irritability and concerns about peers, relationships.

Changing behavior of the adolescents can become a cause of concern for parents. Some common adolescent behavior which can cause concern for a parent include-- risk-taking behavior, mood fluctuations, drug experimentation, sexual activity, rebelliousness, and school problems. Talk to your child about the changes that they would be experiencing during puberty and stress on the fact that these changes are normal and natural which take place in every individual. This can help to make the transition from childhood to adolescence a much less stressful period.

The human body undergoes several changes during adolescence. These changes mark the onset of puberty. Puberty is the age at which the reproductive system becomes functional. The most important change which marks puberty is that boys and girls become capable of reproduction. Puberty ends when an adolescent reaches reproductive maturity . All of us know that a large number of changes take place when we grows older. All of these changes can be grouped under the general process of growth. Some of these changes include:
Increase in weight
Increase in height
Development of temporary or milk teeth which are later replaced by permanent teeth
Increase in the efficiency of different body parts
Improvements in mental functions
These changes are related with attainment of sexual maturity called puberty. These are called secondary sexual characters. Some changes are
Thick hair growth in the armpits and around genital area between the thighs
Darkening of area around the genital nipples
Appearance of thin hair on the legs
arms as well as on the face
The skin frequently becomes oily and we might begin to develop pimples
Change in behaviour
We begin to be conscious and aware of both our own bodies and those of others in new ways
