Answer:

public interest litigation is a short form for PIL.

the government of india introduced this in the early 1980s in response to the complicated judicial system which took a lot of time, money and paperwork. It was devised to increase access to justice. It allowed any individual or organisation to file a PIL in the high court or the supreme court on behalf of those whose rights were violated. The legal process was greatly simplified and even a letter or telegram addressed to the high court or supreme court could be treated as a PIL.
