Public Interest Litigation is a court case that is filed against a government, whether state of national or a body of the government by an individual or a group of individuals in the Supreme Court and also in any High Court.

The purpose of a Public Interest Litigation is to seek justice against the government in case it is felt that the government is depriving someone or a section of people of their interest and rights.

Public interest litigation:

  • PIL is an instrument provided to the people of India for filing a petition directly to the Supreme Court or High Court.
  • Any individual can file the PIL. It is not necessary he or she is directly involved with the matter.  
  • With the efforts of P N Bhagwati, Indians get PIL through which any matter which involves the interest of the public at large can be raised in the court. Now, even the court can file the PIL suo moto in order to get justice.
