A pulley is small wheel like structure that is clamped in stand such that it can rotate at its geometric centre.....
It is usually used to lift the things ....
In physics it is mostly used in the Constraint motion part...where the mass are hanged on pulleys to find the tension in the string of the pulley...

A pulley is a wheel with a groove in it. The groove can hold the rope in position. The wheel turns around a fixed rod on axle that passes through its centre. The axle is fixed to a support. In a Pulley and a fourth can be applied in one direction and the lord can be moved in the other direction.
There are two types of pulleys:
1) Fixed pulley- this type of pulley is fixed on some support. A rope is passed over the pulley. One end of the rope is tied to the load and the effort is applied on the other end . It's used to draw water from well, to raise and hoist the flag, or to draw curtains.
2) Movable pulley- this type of pulley helps to reduce the effort because the weight is supported by more than one pulley. The more the number of pulleys ,easier becomes the work, because the total effort gets divided between the different pulleys.
These pulleys are usually seen in cranes, JCB etc..... , When there is lot of weight of the load.......
Hope it helps!
