The Wodeyars of Mysore, who were petty chieftains, progressively grew in importance. They developed their own rule over a big part of South India which incorporated regions of old Mysore, parts of the present Tamil Nadu and the districts of Dharwar and Dakshina Kannada, with Srirangapatna as their capital. The power of the Wodeyars was more or less unchallenged till 1761 when Hyder Ali, one of their Military Generals rose to enormous potency and triumphed over them.
