It is more realistic than the numbers (pyramid of numbers) at various trophic levels. Pyramid of biomass is upright, exception is particularly in aquatic food chain where the producing unit or producers involving planktons mostly phytoplanktons are short lived or not having a greater life span, in this the biomass will be less than the consumers who compete for survival gradually at a higher level.

In order to overcome the shortcomings of pyramid of numbers, of biomass is used. In this approach individuals in each trophic level are weighed instead of being counted. This gives us a pyramid of biomass, the total dry weight of all organisms at each trophic levels at a particular time.
