is the output of the metabolism of glucose known as glycolysis. One molecule of glucose breaks down into two molecules of pyruvate which are then used to provide further energy, in one of two ways. ... pyruvate is a key intersection in the network of metabolic pathways

During the first stage of respiration (called glycolysis) glucose (a 6-carbon sugar) is broken into 2 molecules of pyruvate (a 3-carbon sugar).

Pyruvate can then move in to the mitochondria for aerobic respiration.

OR

Pyruvate remains in the cytoplasm for anaerobic respiration.
