By definition, velocity of a particle at any instant of time is the time derivate of its position vector, or the rate of change of its position with time. Now, this implies that the definite integral of the velocity of a particle between two time time instants on a velocity time graph would thus equal the displacement of the particle between those instants.

The integral of the velocity time graph is the area underneath the curve, hence, the area below the velocity time graph, between two verticals denoting time instants, is the displacement of the particle during that time period.
