Millikan's oil drop experiment and many other experiments have shown that in nature, electric charges are found to be made up of integral multiples of the smallest amount of charge. This smallest amount is 1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹ coulomb. It is denoted by e and is the charge of an electron. All existing charges are found to be ne where n is a positive or negative integer.

No charge is found in the fraction of e. It means that an electric charge cannot be divided indefinitely. This property of charge is called 'Quantisation' of charge.
