Quartiles in statistics are the numbers that divide a given data set into four parts.
Quartiles are calculated by diving a data set by four using the formula: n / 4
There are three quartiles in a data set, namely:
- 25th percentile, lower quartile or first quartile
- 50th percentile, middle quartile or second quartile
- 75th percentile, the upper quartile and third quartile.
Quartiles can also be defined as the number that divides a data set into four portions with each of the portions being one fourth of the whole data population.
