A proclamation was issued by Queen Victoria on 1stNovember 1858, following the 1857 revolt. It was read at the grand Darbar held at Allahabad by Lord Canning, who was the last Governor General and the first Viceroy of India.Here Lord Canning sent forth the royal proclamation which announced that the queen had assumed the government of India. This proclamation declared the future policy of the British Rule in India.
Queen Victoria, in her proclamation of 1858, assured the Indian princes that their territories will not be annexed arbitrarily and that they will have the right to adoption in order to continue the family line.
