Definition
The radius of gyration is a measure of the elastic stability of a cross-section against buckling. In reality, there are several values of the radius of gyration for a cross-section, depending on which axis is being considered.
Significance
While considering the elastic buckling of columns, the radius of gyration is used in computing the kl/r (the so-called slenderness ratio). The direction about which the r needs to be considered is important, and often the least value will govern the determination of the buckling capacity. Sometimes the least r may be about the principal axes as will be discussed later.
Mathematical Computation
In a circular section, this is a single value. The radius of gyration about any axis can be computed as
