Answer:

The ratio of radii of the ions can affect the arrangement of ions in a crystal. Moreover, the limiting ratio has to be greater than 0.414, (radius ratio greater than 0.414) to fit an octahedral arrangement of anions. In this formation, cations will be able to accommodate 6 anions.

Limiting radius ratio:- As per our knowledge we know that ionic crystal contains cations & anions both in large number. Also we Know that usually size of anions is bigger to the size of the cations.

All the cations are generally surrounded by the anions & also cations and anions touch each other. Arrangement of surrounding is in such a way that it produces maximum stability.

So from limiting radius ratio we get the following results:-

1. We get information about stability of the ionic crystal which is very important.

2. We get information about Coordination number as well.

3. Knowledge about geotmetry of voids.
