Rain water harvesting is the collection and storage of rain, rather than allowing it to run off. Rain water is collected from a roof like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern and, deep pit, aquifer or a reservoir with percolation. Dew and fog can be collected with nets or other tools. Rainwater harvesting differs from storm water harvesting.
The main purpose of rain water harvesting is to use the locally available rainwater to meet water requirements throughout the year without the need of huge capital expenditure. This would facilitate the availability of uncontaminated water for domestic, industrial and irrigation needs.
