The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Parliament. The maximum strength of Rajya Sabha is 250. Out of these , 12 are nominated by the President of India and the remaining 238 are elected from States and Union Territories by the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies. The 12 nominated members are distinguished personalities are excel in various fields of arts , literature , science or social service. At present the Rajya Sabha has 245 members.

Functions of the Rajya Sabha are : -

The members of Parliament exercise their right to vote to elect the President and the Vice President of India.
