a change of wavelength exhibited by some of the radiation scattered in a medium. The effect is specific to the molecules which cause it, and so can be used in spectroscopic analysis.

Raman effect deals with the scattering of light by molecules of a medium when they are excited to vibrational energy levels. C.V. Raman recieved Nobel prize in physics for this contribution.
