In 1999 I was contacted by a humanitarian organization based in the region of El Chaco or El Gran Chaco, a huge area of land stretching over three countries: Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. I was asked to conduct a survey into the physical condition of indigenous communities in the region, with a special emphasis on gender issues, and to put forward a plan for improving women’s health. While preparing for the work, I read in an old book a passing reference to a native population that sacrificed twins for unspecified “selfish” reasons.
