Rayon is an artificial fibre which is made from wood pulp which is then chemically treated to get pure cellulose. This cellulose obtained is cooked down first and then passed through a machine that has holes called spinneret.

Rayon shows many useful properties such as :

\longrightarrow{\tt{easy\:\: moisture\:\: absorption}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{keeps \: the\:  wearer \: cool\:  and\:  comfortable}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{can \: be \: dyed \: easily}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{smooth \: and\:  slippery\:  in\:  nature}}

\longrightarrow{\tt{shine\:  looks\:  like \: silk}}

Hence is used in apparels , surgical dressings , etc.

Rayon is often called as an artificial fibre and also as artificial silk.

It is because Rayon though resembles silk's appearance , softness and many others .

But , it is made from the wood pulp which is mixed with chemicals and then processed . In case of silk it's completely different as it is obtained from the cocoons of the silkworms and hence is considered to be a natural fibre.

Answer:

Rayon is a natural-based material that is made from the cellulose obtained from wood pulp or cotton. It’s a low-cost and convenient fibre to work with and lends itself to diverse uses. There are several grades of rayon that can imitate the look and texture of other natural fibres such as cotton, linen and silk. The different types of this fabric include viscose, modal and lyocell.

Have a great day ahead. ☺
