The higher the metal in the series, the more reactive it is and you usually observe a more vigorous - faster and more exothermic (heat releasing) reaction with oxygen, water or an acid. The more reactive a metal, the more easily it loses electrons to form a positive ion, an electron loss is a process called oxidation.
