Through the 17th and 18th centuries the literacy rates in Europe shot up. Schools were set up in villages to make the peasants and artisans literate. As this literacy and schools spread up in Europe it led to a virtual reading mania.
New forms of books appeared in the market catering to the different needs of the audience. There were ballads, foltales and chapbooks were introduced which were quite cheap and easily affordable by poor people.
The periodical press developed and newspapers and journals were more common now.
Even the ideas of scientists became more accessible to general public.
