Both the names Hindustan and India, have nothing to do nothing with religion, they just loosely translate to "land of the Indus".
The Sanskrit word for the Indus river is "Sindhu".
The Persian name "Hindus" is derived from this word, and they named the land of the "Hindus" (the river, not the religious commmunity, mind you) "Hindustan".
In fact, Hinduism as a religion had no name at all. Foreign travellers named the religion accordingly referring to the land of the Indus river.
Digressing slightly, the name "Indus", in turn, is the Greek derivation of "Hindus", and so the word "India", is of Greek origin.
So much for Hindustan and Hinduism.
