Due to refraction, every colour of light takes different path once a polychromatic light enters a relatively denser medium. It happens as Snell's law states, that
sini/sinr is different for different media and colour of light. Hence, the split light we see are nothing but the components of the original incident light.

Answer :-

First of all, what is dispersion ?

Ans - Dispersion can be defined as the phenomenon in which "white light" gets separated into the light rays of its constituent colours.

Generally, Dispersion is studied by directing a ray of white light on to the surface of a triangular glass prism.

The reasons for the dispersion of white light are as follows :-

  • The different constituent colours of white light travel at different speeds through a triangular glass prism.

  • These variations in the speeds of the rays of light lead to the application of different refractive indices for different colours.

  • These refractive indices measure the ability of bending of the light rays of different colours.

Note :-

The light ray of red colour bends the least.

The light ray of violet colour bends the most.
