Definition of Richter scale
An open-ended logarithmic scale for expressing the magnitude of a seismic disturbance (such as an earthquake) in terms of the energy dissipated in it with 1.5 indicating the smallest earthquake that can be felt, 4.5 an earthquake causing slight damage, and 8.5 a very devastating earthquake.

The Richter Scale is a series of numbers from 1 to 12 used to express the magnitude (or size) of an earthquake. An earthquake of magnitude 2 is ten times as strong as an earthquake of magnitude 1. An earthquake of magnitude 3 on Richter Scale is 100 times as strong as an earthquake of magnitude 1 on the same scale.
