You solve this by using the law of conservation of momentum. The momentum of the gun and that of the bullet are equal and opposite. Let us assume a gun of 20 kg shoots a bullet of 1 kg in a velocity of 100m/s. We have to find the recoil velocity of the gun. Momentum of bullet = 100kgm/s = momentum of gun = 20*v v = recoil velocity = 100/20 = 5m/s Therefore, the recoil velocity of the gun is 5m/s.
