The rectilinear motion is a straight line motion or one dimensional motion.

If the medium is heterogeneous having a gradient of refractive index. Then light rays will not follow a rectilinear (straight line path) motion.If the refractive index of medium is uniform then only light will show rectilinear motion through out the medium.
