Red Soil
This type of soil is formed by the weathering of igneous and metamorphic rocks in peninsular India. Its red colour is due to high iron content. It cannot retain much moisture.
It is mainly found around the black soil zone in the Western Ghats, eastern Madhya Pradesh and in the parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Stunted forests are found on this type of soil.
It is less fertile and found where the rainfall is relatively less. The red soil can be made fertile by adding manures or chemical fertilisers. Oilseeds and millets are widely grown in this type of soil.
