Explanation:

In this reaction, the reactants either gain or lose electrons, change in oxidation number as follows:

If an atom in a reactant gained electrons = oxidation decreases

If an atom in a reactant lost electrons = its oxidation increases

As we know in chemical reaction, no electron is made or destroyed, one element looses the other one accept it, so this process happen at the same time.

A good example is the reaction between hydrogen and fluorine in which hydrogen is being oxidized and fluorine is being reduced:

H 2 + F 2 → 2 HF
