Redox is a chemical reaction in which the oxidation states of atoms are changed. Any such reaction involves both a reduction process and a complementary oxidation process, two key concepts involved with electron transfer processes.

A redox reaction is short for reduction oxidation. When not using the condensed version we normally speak of oxidation-reduction reactions and not the other way around but whomever thought of shortening the two realized that ‘oxired’ just didn’t have the same appeal.

Simply, in a redox reaction one component is reduced and the other component is oxidized. Here is a nice link with a video that will help further explain this concept with examples. I hope you find it worthwhile.
