Redox Reaction: A chemical reaction in which both reduction process and oxidation process are involved.

In this reaction, transfer of electrons takes place between chemical species.

Examples of Redox reaction are:

1. CuO + {H}_{2} \longrightarrow Cu + {H}_{2}O

2. ZnO + C \longrightarrow Zn + CO

Terms used:

Redox: Oxidation-Reduction

Reduction: The process of addition of Hydrogen and removal of Oxygen.

Oxidation: The process of addition of Oxygen and removal of Hydrogen.

Answer:

Classically oxidation refers to combination of an element or a substance with oxygen.

For example, C_(s) + O_2_(g) → CO_2_(g)

2Mg_(s) + O_2_(g) → 2MgO_(g)

In the reactions, C_(s) and Mg_(s) are oxidised to their oxides, CO_2_(g) and MgO_(s) respectively. Classically reduction refers to combination of an element or a substance with hydrogen or removal of oxygen from its compound.

2H_2_(g)+ O_2_(g) → 2H_2O_(g)

In this reaction, hydrogen is oxidised and oxygen is reduced.
