Reducing sugar
1.these are the sugars with free aldehyde
(-CHO) or keto groups >C=O
2. they can reduce ( Cu 2+ ) to cuprous cu+ ion.
3.they reduce fehlings solution and benedict reagent ... eg. all monosaccharides, maltose, lactose .. etc.......
NON REDUCING SUGAR
1. these sugars do not have free aldehyde or keto groups.
2.they cannot reduce Cu+2 ions to Cu+ ions.
3.they do not reduce the fehling solution and benedict reagent.. eg.. sucrose.
