When portuguese arrived at calicut in search of spices, they started tradings with indian textiles , which they carried back to europe. Hence, the term calico was derived .
As European traders were unable to compete with indian textiles, they wanted safe and secure market , so they prevented the entry of indian textiles. Thus an act was passed known as calico act in 1720.
