Law of reflection

1- The angle of the incident light ray is equal to the angle of the reflected light ray:- When a ray of light strikes on the smooth surface it gets reflected. We draw a perpendicular line at the point of incidence, this line is called normal ray. The angle between the incident ray and normal ray is called angle of incident and angle between the reflected ray and normal ray is called angle of reflection. Both the angle is equal. 2- The incident ray, the normal ray at the point of incidence and the reflected ray all lie in the same plane. (The same plane means the same side of the mirror) Angle of incident (i) = Angle of reflected (r) In the above figure, at point O all the three rays normal, incident and reflected are coinciding i.e. lies in the same plane.

• What is reflection?

The bouncing back of ray of light when it is incident on any surface is called reflection.

• There are two laws of reflection :-

» The first law of reflection states that angle of incidence must be equal to the angle of reflection.

» Second law of reflection states that incident ray, reflected ray and normal they all lie on the same plane.

Always remember that laws of reflection will be followed in every situation no matters what the surface of mirror likely is.

Wheather the surface is plane or curved, wheather the surface is smooth or rough laws of reflection must be followed.

Diagram attached!!

In the diagram, angle of incidence and reflection both are of 60° and thus they are following laws of reflection.

Important information :-

Incident ray::

  • The ray of light falling on the surface before reflection or bouncing back is called incident ray.

Reflected ray::

  • The ray of light which is bouncing back after falling on the surface of mirror is called reflected ray.

Normal::

  • The imaginary line drawn perpendicular to the surface of mirror is called it's normal.

Angle of incidence::

  • The angle made by incident ray and normal is called angle of incidence.

Angle of reflection::

  • The angle made between reflected ray and normal is called angle of reflection.
