.When light falls on (a polished) surface, it is seen to change its direction of propagation. This is just like a ball bouncing back when hit on a floor or a wall. This phenomenon is called reflection of light.

Reflection can be defined as the bouncing back of light rays from a smooth surface. Remember that, light rays get absorbed by the rough surfaces so for describing the reflection of light rays smooth surface should be used. Its better for understanding that, the bouncing back of the incident ray as the reflected ray from the reflecting surface which is perpendicular to the normal. For describing the reflection of light rays never forget that the incident ray, the reflected ray and normal, all lie in the same plane and the angle of reflection is always equal to the angle of incidence.
