what is refraction of light ?

Refraction is a wave phenomenon, It changes its direction when it passes through one medium to another.

  • Refraction of light takes place whenever there is a change in the velocity.

Write the laws of refraction of light ?

  • In the two mediums, The ratio of The sine of The angle of incidence to The sine of The angle of refraction are constant.

  • Incident ray, reflected ray and the normal drawn, lie in the same plane at the point of two mediums.

Whenever the incident ray passes through the normal, it always goes straight.

• Refraction of light ::

When light travels from one medium to another medium, obliquely (at any angle other than 0°), it bends. This bending takes place because of difference in the speed of light in both medium and this bending of light is called refraction of light.

• Laws of refraction ::

There are two laws of refraction:-

  • The first law of refraction states that incident ray, refracted ray and normal to the surface, they all lie on the same plane.

  • The second law of refraction states that the ratio of sine of angle of incidence and sine of angle of refraction will remain constant for a given pair of mediums. This constant can also be expressed as Greek letter μ (mu). This law is also called Snell's law.

• Mathematical equation for 2nd law::

\large\boxed{\rm{\sf{\star\;\;\dfrac{\sin \;i}{\sin\;r}=constant\;(\mu) }}}

This constant value will remain same for a pair of mediums but will change as soon as the medium is changed.

• This bending doesn't take place in every case::

Whenever light falls at 90° to the surface i.e. along the normal, this bending will not happen as angle i will be 0° and value of sin i is also 0°. Thus the value of sin r will become 0.
